Rapid eLearning Development

“The ReD course is for anyone who wants to learn how to create engaging and effective elearning content or informal media (blogs, podcasts, video, presentations, screencasts and more). It will also help you support others within your organisation who are creating informal media. It assumes no previous knowledge and covers effective instructional design with text, images, audio, video and interactivity. It also includes links to tutorials for Articulate (a popular ‘rapid’ elearning author tool) and Adobe Captivate (an IT system training author tool).”

Skills I’ve developed:

  • images: developed photo editing skills using photoshop to improve images and compress for web use

  • audio: developed audio editing and podcasting skills using Audacity

  • video: used Camtasia and Audacity to create and edit a short video on Google’s Sidewiki which had just launched

  • text: followed Plain English guidelines, wrote effective learning outcomes and assessement questions
  • final assignment: used Adobe Articulate to create an online learning resource

Reflection:

“My final assignment includes images downloaded under Creative Commons license and are compressed for web viewing. The lack of audio (I would have preferred to include) is a huge omission which not only reduces the effectiveness based on Medina’s brain rules but also meant I failed to demonstrate my excellent new found Audacity skills!! I did try to include a variety of inputs and exercises to motivate, appeal to different styles of learning, maintain interest and repeat, repeat, repeat the target language. I hope the final exercise personalises and contextualises the learning experience.

On a personal level the final assignment gave me an opportunity to try Adobe Articulate which was fantastic. I’m sure I’ll use this in the future. It was fairly easy to use but I’d imagine I’m not using it to it’s potential yet. I’ll need to check out some tutorials.

Another valuable part of this journey are the resources gathered. Things like where to get free images on the web, tools like Articulate and screenr that I haven’t used before – all stashed in my virtual tool box along with all the ideas we’ve shared.”
